Getting Started

Critique: Competitions
It was hard to get back into the swing of things, but my first week of classes and my first design came together OK. I need to start thinking more out of the box though on my future designs. Hopefully I can execute a great idea for the Spring Preview. I'm staying away from the rain, tree and flower ideas for the cover, but my idea might be a little too summery. I was thinking of incorporating fruit somehow. My first thought for the splash page was to make it full of color with large type. I don’t want to include too much text. I think it would be a good preview into the spread to have a few photos located at the bottom, instead of listing the sections. The dot for the "i" in Spring is suppose to be a strawberry seed. I'm still trying to decide if the fruit idea is too summery. Here is my splash page so far.

Response: Major Magazine Company
After hearing from the major magazine company today, I am much more comfortable with what is expected for our project. Seeing the projects of previous design students helped a lot as well. It’s so awesome we have this opportunity, and I’m looking forward to getting started. I would love to work for there, so this should be a great connection for me. It was interesting to hear about everything that goes into designing the issue. There are so many details and things that need to be thought through that you don't realize. It didn't cross my mind that BH&G plans the recipes and meals so that people who are not as experienced in cooking, or those who are very experienced, are not offended in any way. I love the photography in the magazine, so it was neat to learn about the details that go into it. I checked out more cakes on their site, and I found this adorable cake for kids. I had never seen anything quite like it.

You Can’t Miss This:
The birthday cake spread from BH&G we discussed today in class lead me to look at various cakes for design inspiration. I’ve always loved to cook and bake, and I am fascinated with the beautiful design that goes into cakes. I enjoy looking at cakes on the Wedding Channel site. They have a lot of neat creations.
I found these recycled wine glasses on the blog I am following. The post is from a couple weeks ago, but they caught my attention so I had to share! I think they are such a great idea, and they’re beautiful too. I’ll have to buy some for myself.
